How to Clean Deep Fryer – Step by Step Guidelines
If you frequently use a deep fryer, whether at home or in a restaurant kitchen, you know how challenging it can be to remove the large amounts of oil and food particles that accumulate in the equipment.
That’s why you need to clean your deep fryer from time to time. If possible, after every frying to prevent the grime from building up.
Here are some tips to guide you through.
1. Unplug The Deep Fryer And Allow It To Cool
You don’t want to see the oil explode on your face, right? Well, and then be sure to unplug the equipment before you start cleaning. You might be in a hurry to make your fryer clean for the next cooking, but you don’t have to take the risk. Just disconnect your deep fryer from the socket and allow it to cool completely to avoid getting burnt.
2. Drain The Oil
If you’re planning to reuse the oil, drain it into a clean container with a sealed lid. Hot oil is very dangerous, and, therefore, keep it away from you. You can lock the container in a cupboard. If you’re not going to use the oil again, go ahead and dispose of it. Even so, don’t drain the oil in your sick. It can clog the drain, and you don’t want that. Find some other way to dispose of it.
3. Remove the Frying Basket and Put It Aside
Once you’ve drained all the oil from the deep fryer, take the frying basket out and place it somewhere next to the sink. To prepare it for cleaning, smear some dish wash detergent on it and let it stay for some time.
Most of the time, your frying basket will contain stubborn stains that may not come out if you start cleaning immediately. Leaving it with soap for some time will help dislodge those stubborn stains.
4. Wipe off Remaining Oil
Of course, you can’t drain all the oil from the deep fryer. Some oil is usually left on the lid and the pot, and you need to wipe them off. Use a damp sponge or a piece of cloth to wipe off the oil residue and food particles inside the deep fryer pot. In case the oil has caked on the surface of the pot, you can use a pan scraper to scrape it off. However, do it gently so that you don’t damage the finish of the equipment. Preferably, use plastic utensils to scrape off the oil as it won’t scratch your fryer.
5. Wipe the Heating Element
Some deep fryers have a heating element with a pair of metal rods. These metal rods also need to be cleaned, especially if they’re covered in oil residue. Use a paper towel to wipe off the remains of oil on the heating element.
Don’t apply a lot of force when doing this as some metal rods are made of thin wires, and so, they can easily bend. For easy cleaning, some fryers have removable heating elements or ones attached to a hinge so that you can easily pull them to the surface.
6. Wash The Fryer Using Sponge And Dish Soap
It’s now time to do the actual cleaning. Here, you need a sponge and dish wash soap to get started. Add four to five droplets of the dish wash soap into the fryer, spreading it evenly on the sides. Start scrubbing from the bottom in a circular motion to form a lather. Continue scrubbing in a circular motion up the sides of the fryer. Make sure you remove all the stains. For stubborn stains, use plastic utensils to scrape them off.
7. Fill the Fryer with Hot Water
Now transfer your fryer from the tap. Avoid placing it on a wet sink. Fill your fryer with plenty of hot water and leave it for 30 minutes. Also, run warm water through the frying basket and use a scrubbing brush to remove food particles from it. Rinse the basket thoroughly to remove remains of soap from it. Finally, clean and rinse the fryer once the timer hits 30 minutes.
8. Replace or Clean Dirty Filters on Fryer Lid
Depending on the manufacturer’s manual, you should either clean or replace the dirty filters on the fryer lead. So, check the instruction manual to know which direction to take. Mostly, foam grease filters can be cleaned in warm soapy water and left to dry.
However, for charcoal odor filters you’ll need to do a replacement as they’re not washable. So, check the manufacturer’s manual to be sure.
9. Rinse The Cooking Pot And Leave It To Dry
Use plenty of clean water to rinse the cooking pot to remove all soap particles. After that, dry the frying equipment and store it properly for the next cooking. Dry the outside with a clean towel, whereas leaving the inside to air dry. Don’t start using the fryer immediately after cleaning. Give it time to dry completely to get rid of water that might have sipped into the electric system.
