I actually don’t keep tortilla chips in my house anymore because my husband and I can’t stop mindlessly munching away, and it’s starting to show on my waistline! But after months of going chip-free, the whole family is starting to miss those delicious snackable chips.

Enter… The air fryer!

This ingenious device has allowed me to rekindle my love affair with tortilla chips in a far healthier (although no less morish) way. By using significantly less oil, I can create my very own perfectly crispy and seasoned tortilla chips in a matter of minutes.

Perfect for dipping, snacking, or creating loaded nachos, this is the recipe I never knew how much I needed until now!

Tortilla chip seasoning

Even at they’re most basic, I love to sprinkle my tortilla chips with sea salt and a little black pepper before cooking, but when you fancy something a little more creative (stand back, Doritos!) I love to play around with flavors and seasonings. I’ve even included some dessert chips for when you need a sweet treat in your life.

Simply mix together the seasoning in a small bowl, and brush the mixture over your tortillas before cooking for a taste sensation that rivals anything you can buy in the store!

Air fryer tortilla chips recipe

Yield: 4 servings
Prep Time: 4 minutes
Cook Time: 21 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 medium corn tortillas (store-bought or make your own)
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1/8 tsp sea salt
  • Your choice of seasonings and dips

Preparation Method:

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 350’F (if your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat mode, simply set it to 350’F and leave it to warm up for approximately 5 minutes).
  2. Cut your round tortillas into quarters and brush with olive oil (if you’re making flavored tortillas, brush with your pre-mixed oil and seasoning) on both sides.
  3. Arrange your tortilla quarters in a single layer in the air fryer basket—Cook for 3 minutes.
  4. Use your tongs to turn the tortillas over, then cook for another 1-3 minutes on the other side.
  5. When the chips are golden and lightly browned around the edges, transfer them to a wire rack to cool. As they cool, they will continue to get crispier.
  6. Sprinkle a little sea salt over your chips as they crisp and cool (regardless of what seasoning you’ve used – even the dessert chips are delicious with a touch of sea salt).

Notes

If you would rather use less oil for your homemade tortilla chips, you could also use cooking spray to help your tortillas crisp up in the air fryer. I personally like the flavor olive oil gives to my chips, but the cooking spray will also produce delicious, crispy results.

It is imperative to let your air fryer heat up before adding your chips. Many models don’t include a preheat mode, but all this means is that the device won’t notify you when it’s finished preheating, not that it doesn’t need to be preheated! If you’re uncertain, turn the fryer on for around 5 minutes before cooking.

Homemade corn tortillas

To really impress (and minimize calories wherever possible), I love to make my own corn tortillas from scratch. This gives me more control over the ingredients, is surprisingly quick and easy to get right, but tortilla calories are nothing to be scared of … Plus, it amazes my family and friends every time I tell them I’ve made the tortilla chips they’re enjoying themselves!

For 12-16 tortillas, you’ll need 2 cups of Masa Harina, ½ tsp salt, and 1 ½ cups of warm water.
Simply combine the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, then add the water gradually to make a dough. Knead into a ball, then separate into golf-ball-sized chunks to create tortillas approximately 4” across.

Use a tortilla press to firmly press your dough into the flat tortilla circles, then cook on a cast-iron skillet for about a minute on each side, one at a time. If you don’t have a tortilla press, use a skillet or flat-bottomed casserole dish to squash the dough into the flattest shape you can manage!

Trust me, everyone will be so impressed with your culinary skills, and you’ll never go to the store for tortillas or chips again!
