The dimension I have in mind is thickness. That's right, coffee
made with a coffee press is fuller in body that coffee made
with a filter drip system. The extra body comes from the
tiny particles of solid coffee that pass through the press'
screen and remain behind in your cup. You can see some
evidence of them in the sludge that may settle out in your
cup.
This richer mouth-feel makes for a more luxurious experience
of coffee drinking. The first time I had coffee from one of the
these, I put my automatic drip pot away for good. It's true that
you have to actually boil the water and then pour it over the
grounds, but if you're enough of a grown-up to drink coffee
I think you'll be able to handle it.

I have seen several other makes of coffee press and bodum is
by far the most satisfying to use.

Pros: Great tasting coffee, easy to use, very stylish.

Cons: A bit troublesome to clean by hand.

BEWARE, though! French Presses generate a sludge at the bottom of every cup. It's part of the charm, but increases in volume with a decrease in the quality grind! If you're serious about coffee, spend the extra $$$ and buy a good burr grinder!

This is THE brand to use if you use a French press. You will never have any trouble with coffee grounds in your coffee. The press fits perfectly and the screen is fine enough to keep even the smallest grinds from leaking through. Only one caution, 4 cups means 4 small cups of coffee. If you use a mug, its 2 1/2 to 3.

Does great with rice and more, January 2, 2009

I wanted a rice cooker that specifically had a brown rice function since we love brown rice but it can be so hard to cook it well other ways (I've tried stovetop, pressure cooker, and baking in the oven).

So far, I'm thrilled - the brown rice was amazing, first try; I've also done bulgur and quinoa using the white rice setting and both have been perfect with no adjustments. I love that the pot is non-stick and that the condensation from the lid is caught in a reservoir - it doesn't go down the side of the pot or inside where it's going to damage the cooker itself.

Delay timer is also extremely helpful - if I know I want dinner at six, I can set the cooker up any time (allowing for cooking time) and have the rice ready right on time without having to think about it. The cooking cycle is long but worth it for the results.

One caveat - whatever you are cooking will crust to the bottom the longer you leave it on "keep warm" - I suggest you turn it off as soon as it's done. It will remain warm in the pot for a time with the lid closed anyway. And if you use the delay timer, you can schedule it to be done right on time anyway.

I almost always eat brown rice. I had a Black & Decker Rice cooker, which always left the brown rice clumpy and burnt on the bottom. I ran into this Arc-1000 at Costco (for $29!!) and figured I could always take it back if I didn't like it. Not! I am very happy w/this. The brown rice is a whole different texture, much more fluffy. It tastes like brown rice is supposed to taste. The steamer offers another way to cook healthy. It comes w/ recipes for one pot meals, and soups. It is very easy to use. You put it measured rice, add water to pre-measured line, close it and push a button, it does the rest.
The Arc-1000 was leaving some bottom rice a bit darker, so I'll take the hint of turning it off. That would make it even better, but it wasn't as bad as the B&D. If you are looking for a good inexpensive rice cooker (I was shocked at how much you can spend on these) that does a great job, go for it!

I picked this cooker up from Costco for under thirty bucks. If you don't want to spend a lot on a computerized rice cooker, this is the one for you. It's the cheapest fuzzy logic rice cooker on the market, but still makes great rice. It doesn't have a bunch of extra functions you'd never use, just white rice, brown rice, quick rice, and steam cook.

You have to play around a little with the amount of water when cooking the rice. If it's too dry, just add a little bit more water and leave it in keep warm mode for about 15 minutes. If you're planning on using keep warm mode, you also have to add a bit more water to keep the rice from burning to the bottom.

I've used mine for everything from steaming veggies to making steel cut oats. One thing I particularly like is that when you set the timer for steaming, it doesn't start counting down until the water is actually boiling.

The only thing I'd like better was if there were extra internal bowls available. I had originally bought this one thinking to use it until I got a more expensive rice cooker, but that purchase has been put on hold indefinitely simply because this one works so well.

To make steel cut oats, I use the brown rice function due to the long soaking time. Just add 4 cups water to every 1 cup of oats. Also add pat of butter or a bit of oil to the water to keep it from boiling over, and a pinch of salt. You can add raisins or other dried fruit if you like. I usually make a double batch, and it comes out perfect every time. Perfectly cooked with that unique chewy steel cut oat texture. No more soaking and making it on the stove for me.

I picked out this coffee maker because of a reasonable price and was a recommended best buy in Consumers Report magazine. I have only had a week or so and can't address long term reliability. What it does do is NOT DRIP! It does not drip when pouring from the glass pot to the water reservoir or when pouring coffee into a cup. I do NOT have to be extra careful when pouring. It also stops the coffee flow from the filter as soon as I pull the pot out and does NOT drip on the warmer. Again, do NOT have to be extra careful here. It also does NOT leak condensation out of the water reservoir top when lifting the lid. The condensation on the reservoir lid drips back into the reservoir when the lid is lifted. The time and delay brew functions ARE easy to set and work fine. The coffee brewed fairly quickly and did not overflow the filter to allow grounds into the pot. So far, I am very happy with a product that someone spent some time making user friendly and practical. This is a well engineered inexpensive product.

Yes, I used to have to buy those overpriced, German coffee makers--but not any more. When my latest $100 coffee maker started leaking from both the underside and from the little, unreadable, glass tube on the side, I started looking around for a replacement.

I settled on this Black and Decker model because it does everything the high-priced models do, but at a quarter of the price. After three weeks, the clock still keeps excellent time, the machine still comes on when I'm sound asleep so that I wake up to coffee ready to drink. The coffee tastes very good (c'mon, drip coffee is drip coffee--and I am STILL a coffee snob) and is certainly hot enough. The coffee maker is absolutely EASY to program; each button serves but one function. Aside from the fact that it doesn't LEAK, it seems I lose power here with disturbing regularity, so I like to be able to set the clock and the timer easily and quickly and feel assured that I'll have coffee when I wake up.

What I don't miss about the old coffee maker: leaks, erratic, confusing programming and multiple functions for one button, default ON for auto coffee making (and there's no way to turn it OFF), special little (hard to find) charcoal filter gizmo, adjustable temperature settings on the hot plate, and did I mention LEAKS.

What I miss about the old coffee maker: ability to change length of time the hot plate stays hot, "CALC" calcium warning. Both of which are easy to overcome. If I want two more hours of hot plate all I do is hit the "power" button; if I want to decalcify my machine, all I have to do is run a load of vinegar through on the solstices and equinoxes.
